28 Investigation of barrier properties and critical level of filling of coatings on the basis of water film-forming dispersions of
anticorrosive application —Prof. Stepin S.N., Ph.D. Katnov V.E., Ph.D. Svetlakov A.P., Rabbanieva E.S.
Abstract:

A consequence of obvious economic and ecological advantages of materials on the basis of water dispersions of film-forming polymers is the steady trend of increase of their share in the total amount of the manufacturing paint and varnish products. Low level of filling and increased hydrophilicity of coatings on their basis belongs to the factors constraining the use of water-dispersible paints and varnishes. It especially concerns anticorrosive coatings, which barrier properties badly worsen at high water absorption and excessive filling. Moreover, low critical pigment volume concentration of pigments in coatings limits possibilities of use of cheap fillers, which content considerably influences the price of coating.
Results of research of operating properties and ability to filling of a number of commercially available acrylate water dispersions, which producers present them as a film-forming basis of anticorrosive water-dispersible primers are given in this work. The received results allow to range the studied dispersions on the quality indicators and to choose objects for development of the innovative filled anticorrosive compositions.
Keywords: acrylate water dispersions, granulometric composition, coatings, barrier properties, adhesion, critical pigment volume concentration.

32 Influence of coalescents on freeze-thaw stability of styrene-acrylate latex and properties of coatings — Ph.D. Krikotnenko V.S., bachelor Pekarsky M.G., Ph. D., Prof. Tolmachev I.A., scientific researcher Petrenko N.A.
Abstract:

The work involved the influence of coalescents most commonly used in the formulations of waterborne paints and varnishes (texanol, butyl cellosolve (BC), butyldiglycol acetate (BDGA), UCAR Filmer iBT, Nexcoat NX-795, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on freeze-thaw stability of styrene-acrylate copolymer latexes. It was shown that in the presence of coalescents take place a decrease in freeze-thaw stability. Using the three-phase model of the latex system and assessing the degree of swelling of latex films in aqueous solutions and coalescent emulsions, the obtained data was analyzed and it was shown that the effect of coalescents on the latex frost resistance is determined by the place of its localization in the latex system: in the presence of coalescents localized in the aqueous phase (IPA, BC) freeze-thaw stability decreases slightly, and the most significant decrease in freeze-thaw stability is observed for latex containing coalescent localized in the core of latex particles (texanol, UCAR Filmer iBT).
The evaluation of the technical performance of latex films and coatings formed from compositions containing mixtures of coalescents that differ in localization latex system has been carried out. It was found established that in a certain area of the ratios of the components of the coalescing mixture there is an increased frost resistance of the compositions, and coatings based on them have high hardness and relatively low hydrophilicity and water permeability.
Keywords: latex, freeze-thaw stability, coalescents, acrylate copolymers.

Abstract:

A new express method for assessment of biocides efficiency, used for protection of paint coatings, which allows to evaluate reliably biocide efficiency for 2–5 day (instead of 25–84 day in standard methods) and with the use of only one test-culture instead of 10 is presented.
The biocides efficiency on agar culture mediums and their compatibility with the paint coating system (solubility, coating morphology) have been investigated. Then, the results obtained were compared with those according the standard methods (GOST 9.050-75 “ESZKS. Paint Coatings. Test Methods on Mould Resistance”).It was ascertained, that the proposed express method offers the sensitivity analogous to those in the standard test method on mould resistance of paint coatings, in which not only fungi spores, but also different test-cultures are applied on the surface of paint coatings in order to increase their growth. Comparable tests were made using three biocides and four paint coating systems. The best of the biocides, investigated by both proposed express method, and standard method, was found to be Vantocil 100 (polyhexamethylenebiguanidine hydrochloride).

35 Catalytic effect of carbon nanoparticles on the thermolysis of intumescent coatings — Ph.D., associate professor Zybina O. A., Dr. tech. sci., Professor Babkin O. E., Dr. tech. sci., Professor Snegirev A. Yu.
Abstract:

Intumescent paints are designed to produce fireproof reactive coatings which swell or expand under the influence of fire with generation of coke cellular material layer which decreases heat and mass transfer to the protected surface. The article deals with some of results of the work connected to a modification of swelling fireproof coating by carbon framework structures. It is shown that carbon nano-additives (fullerenes, nanotubes, endofullerenes, graphene) provide better fire protective behavior of the intumescent coating, which is explained by their influence on the formation of the intumescent layer structure which is more resistant to the influence occurring during the fire. It is shown the addition of carbon nanoparticles to the composition improves swelling mechanical, thermal-acid stability, fire-resistance, etc. It was established that the carbon nano-additives exhibit catalytic activity at the initial stage of the thermolytic synthesis of coke cellular material layer at 170–240 ° C by the method of microcalorimetry.

19 Combination of water-based dispersion of paraffin and ceresin with polymer dispersions — Tereshko A. E., Prof. Indeikin E. A.,
Prof. Golikov I. V.
Abstract:

The compatibility of polymer dispersions with water-based dispersions of solid petroleum hydrocarbons was studied. As the objects of the investigation were used dispersions of polymers of different chemical nature: polyvinylacetate, polyurethane, polyperchlorovinylacrylate, copolymers of styrene with butyl(meth)acrylate and butadiene. Water-based dispersions of polymers and water-based dispersions of hydrocarbons were combined. The water-based dispersions of the petroleum paraffin and the ceresin developed by us were used. The dispersion of paraffin is stabilized with polyvinyl alcohol, and the ceresin dispersion is stabilized with an anionic surfactant. The pH areas providing of compatibility and stability of such dispersions was established by the electrokinetic researches. Presence of hydrocarbon dispersion in the system in most cases reduces the initial coagulation rate and increases the aggregative stability of the system was shown. The effect of petroleum hydrocarbons on the change in the surface energy of coatings formed from the combined dispersions was investigated. Coatings were formed both under ordinary conditions and at temperature exceeding the melting point of paraffin and ceresin (70 °C). The surface energy of coatings decreases even with a small content of hydrocarbon in the coatings (up to 10%) was established. Heat treatment allows to reduce the surface energy by another 3–5 mJ/m2. As a result of heat treatment, a microstructure consisting of paraffin crystals is formed on the surface of the polymer coating, which increases the order and dispersion hysteresis of wetting. Thus, the physicochemical conditions for combining of paraffin and ceresin dispersions with polymer dispersions have been established.

40 Research on the impact of titanium dioxide of different trademarks on the process of thermolysis of intumescent fire-protective coatings — Ustinov A. A.,Zybina O. A. , Dr.Sc. Babkin O. E.
Abstract:

The paper overviews the role of titanium dioxide as a component of intumescent coatings in the process of their thermolysis. It is stated that the properties of a charred layer forming from an intumescent coating must correlate with the properties of titanium dioxide's species, such as surface treatment and crystalline structure. Thermal analysis proves this statement showing that rutile titanium dioxide helps forming a charred layer which has the highest thermal stability thus an intumescent's efectiveness grows up. It is shown that the quality of primary products is extremely important for intumescent compositions as they must operate reliably in case of fire; and knowledge of processes that happen within the composition provides an opportunity to find the best-performing ingredients.
Keywords: fire safety, fire protection, swelling coatings, intumescent compositions, fire-protective paints, thermolysis, titanium dioxide, thermal analysis, derivatography, swelling coefficient.

20 Spreading of the epoxy-polyester powder coatings melts — Kotova D. S., Dr. chem. sci. Professor Indeikin E. A.
Abstract:

The powder coatings formation is associated with the transition of polymers or oligomers from a glass state to a viscous flow, followed by spreading and curing (in the case of thermoset materials). The processes during the formation of matt and glossy powder materials were analyzed using the DSC-method. There is a large variance in the differential spreading curves of the epoxy oligomer, polyester, and mixtures thereof. This is due to the fact that the presence in the solution of components differing in structure and chemical composition disrupts the complementarity of molecules, reducing the possibility of orientational intermolecular interaction. This leads to a decrease in the viscosity of the melt and, correspondingly, to an increase in fluidity. The influence of pigmentation on the powder coatings spreading rate was also studied. It should be noted that in spite of the close values of VCP, and for matt coatings, practically the same, relatively small amounts of color pigments significantly and differently affect the spreading of melts. Pigmentation by titanium dioxide (white powder coating) leads to the most significant increase in spreadability, the least increase was with phthalocyanine green pigment and technical carbon.
For glossy powder coatings, the pigmentation results in an increase in the spreading speed for the powder material. The spreading process of matt samples, additionally containing epoxy resin incompatible with the basic epoxy-polyester matrix, depending on the pigment type used, is accelerated or slowed down compared to the unpigmented material.

15 The influence of chemical structure of fluorine-containing organosilicon copolymers on moisture resistance of epoxy resin cured by amines — Parshina M. S., Soldatov M. A., Makarova V. A., Serenko O. A., Muzafarov A. M.
Abstract:

The compositions based on epoxy resin and fluorine-containing organosilicon copolymers were investigated. It is shown that random copolymers containing in its composition branched fluorine-organosilsesquioxane, phenylsilsesquioxane and linear methylvinylsiloxane links are characterized by a low compatibility with epoxy resin, which depends on the content of linear methylphenylsiloxane blocks in the copolymer structure and increases with an increase in their number. Introduction to epoxy resin is 0.5 wt. % copolymer in which the ratio fluorine -organosilsesquioxane, phenylsilsesquioxane and linear methylvinylsiloxane units is 1:1:1, leads to lower moisture absorption epoxy composition is more than 2 times. It is shown that the use of copolymers, containing units with different function in relation to modifiable matrix, target selection of their composition is a promising method of increasing the hydrophobicity and moisture resistance of epoxy resin coatings.

22 Production of titanium dioxide in processing of low-titanium slag - Dr. Sc. (Engineering) Gerasimova L. G., PhD. (Engineering) Shchukina E. S., Dr. Sc. (Engineering) Maslova M. V.
Abstract:

The technology of low-titanium raw materials, including titanium slag, isolated during carbothermic reduction of the Khibinsky titanomagnetite has been investigated. The chemical composition of the slag - TiO2 - 65%, chromophore impurities in the form of compounds of manganese, chromium and vanadium was established. Conditions are found under which sulfuric acid technology produces titanium dioxide of high purity - 99.5% TiO2. The achievement of such a result contributes to pre-treatment of the slag with dilute mineral acids at which manages the main free from iron masses, partially extracted chromophore elements. At the same time the content of titanium in the slag increases by more than 15%. Sulfuric acid decomposition of such slag with 80% H2SO4 and subsequent aqueous treatment of the sulphate sinter provides leaching of titanium to form a sulfate solution, from which a hydrated product practically free of impurities is formed by thermal hydrolysis, which takes place in the presence of a reducing agent (Zn powder). The specific composition of the solution and the conditions for conducting hydrolysis made an impact on the structure of titanium dioxide and, accordingly, its surface properties. In particular, when using a low-concentration titanium prehydrolysis solution, titanium dioxide is obtained in the form of anatase with a specific surface of particles equal to 50-55 m2/g. Rutile with a denser structure is formed from a solution with a higher concentration. Thus, by regulating the technological parameters, it is possible to expand the range of obtained products and, accordingly, the field of its use: in the production of paint and building materials in the production of ligatures, condensers, and also in the compositions of heat-resistant glues and plastics.

Abstract:

Methods of differential thermal and X-ray phase analysis were used to study the oxidation of Zn-Dust zinc dust particles in air with oxygen in the air with the ethylsiliconate binder of Dynasylan MKS brand. It was shown that the oxidation of zinc particles begins when the temperature reaches 315 °C, in the presence of Dynasylan MKS — at 450 °C. 36 Estmation of fire hazard of thin-layer paint-and-lacquer coatings —Dr.techn. sci., professor Konstantinova N. I., Krivoshapkina O. V. , Ph. D. Shebeko A. Yu., Goltsov K. N.
Abstract:

The issues of fire hazard of finishing and facing building materials and products covered with paint-and-lacquer coatings (PLC) are considered in the paper. There are provided comprehensive experimental investigations in evaluation of combustibility, inflammability, flame spreading on the surface, smoke generation and toxicity of combustion products of some facing materials that consist of incombustible base and PLC differ in chemical composition and thickness. The value of thickness of PLC, applied on incombustible base, that is safe in the view of fire safety was ascertained during investigations. This value was 300 microns.
There are elaborated the proposals for amendment to the project of new edition of SP 2.13130 concerning possibility of applying of combustible materials of protective-and-decorative finishing with thickness up to 0.3 mm that are applied on incombustible external surface of exterior walls (including facing and finishing of façade systems) for buildings of all classes of functional fire safety including F1.1 and F4.1 classes.
Keywords: fire safety of finishing and facing building materials and products, paint-and-lacquer coatings (PLC), fire safety parameters, fireproof thickness of layer of protective-and-decorative finishing of building and structures

44 On the creation of recipes of effective fire-protective coatings for building construсtions — Ph.D., Associate Professor Zybina O. A., Dr. techn. sci., Professor Babkin O. E.
Abstract:

The roles of main components of fire-protective swelling compositions (ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol, melamine, titanium dioxide and polymer binder) are overviewed. It is shown that well-known principles of creation of intumescent compositions are not exactly correct, as the impact of their components on the process of building of a charred layer is not fully studied. It leads to creation of low effective intumescent compositions. The information about an intumescent process and the role of intumescent components is revised and this fact gives an opportunity to create more effective fire-protective paints.
Keywords: fire protection, fire-protective composistions, intumescents, fire-protective paints, ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol, melamine, titanium dioxide.

18 Problems of adhesion strength of UV-curing coatings — Dr. techn. sci. Babkin O. E., Babkina L. A., Il'ina V. V., Melidina A. A.
Abstract:

The paper presents data on the study of the processes of formation of coatings from photopolymer compositions using ultraviolet curing technology. On the example of compositions based on aliphatic urethane acrylates with the addition of monomers of acrylic series with different functionality and promoters of adhesion, the mechanisms of polymerization inside the layer of the formed coating are considered. The applied method of Raman spectroscopy allowed us to prove that for thin- (up to 100 μm) and thick-layer (for 300 μm) coatings, a different degree of conversion of double bonds in the depth of the coating and different efficiency of the post-exposition polymerization during light storage are characteristic. The obtained data are related to the experimental data on the change in the adhesion strength of coatings during storage.
Keywords: coatings, photopolymerization, UV-curing, adhesion strength.

40 Wear resistance of coatings — Pavlov A. V., Ph.D. Merkulova Yu. I., Zelenskaya A. D. , Ph.D. Zheleznyak V. G.
Abstract:

In this paper we consider composite coatings that have wear resistance, varieties of destruction of coatings due to wear, as well as options for reducing it by creating coatings based on film-forming substances of various chemical nature and functional additives, including nanosized fillers that can be introduced in small quantities in industrially produced varnish-and-paint materials, while improving the performance characteristics of the coatings obtained on their basis.
An attempt is made to generalize scientific literature and perspective developments in the field of wear-resistant coatings. The work shows film forming agents, fillers, including nanopowders, used to create wear-resistant coatings.

44 Fire protection with intumescent coatings under the hydrocarbon fire conditions — Ph.D. Drinberg A. S., Ph.D. Gravit M. V., Ph.D. Zybina O. A.
Abstract:

The methodological approaches fixed in Russian and foreign normative documents concerning the application of paint coatings to ensure the specified fire resistance of building structures during the modeling of the hydrocarbon combustion regime are investigated. It is shown that the use of protective equipment in conditions of the hydrocarbon fire regime abroad is regulated by internal industry standards. In Russia, there is no necessary normative and experimental basis for justifying the methodology for testing the fire resistance of building structures with the modeling of the hydrocarbon fire regime. The comparative characteristics of imported fire retardant coatings effective in the conditions of hydrocarbon burning and the results of fire laboratory tests of several domestic epoxy coatings intended for the fire protection of metal structures from a hydrocarbon fire are given.
Keywords: fire retardant coatings, oil and gas complex constructions, building structures, fire resistance limit, fire protection means, intumescent coatings, flame retardant efficiency, temperature regimes of fire, cellulose combustion, hydrocarbon combustion.
